In today’s technologically advanced world, offices are jam-packed full of electronic equipment. From computers, telephones, printers, scanners, heaters, air-conditioning units, kettles, microwaves and mobile phones constantly being charged, companies are paying a fortune in energy bills.
The good news is that there are plenty of ways you can reduce this. As well as saving your business some money, you can also feel good knowing that you’re doing your bit for the environment.
Switch to laptops
Laptops use an incredible 80% less energy than desktop models so if you make the swap there is no doubt that you will see dramatic energy savings. This also makes it much easier for employees to work remotely which again saves you money because they’re not in the office using electricity.
Put electronics on sleep mode
Most electronics now have a power save or sleep mode which you can set to kick-in after they haven’t been used for a set amount of minutes. The energy-saving mode uses on average, 70% less energy than full-power mode so this is a very simple yet highly effective way of cutting back on those energy bills.
Shut everything down at night
It might sound obvious to most people but many business owners fail to realise the financial cost of not turning off their equipment at night. Ask staff to shut down their computers, make sure other electronic equipment is on sleep mode and turn off all the lights.
Buy a new fridge
You may think you’re saving yourself money by using an old fridge but older models can cost you hundreds of extra pounds in electricity every year. Also think about the size of the fridge you’re using – the bigger it is, the more it will cost you to run it. If you’re a small office or nobody really uses it, consider getting a mini-refrigerator to save on costs as well.
Look out for energy ratings
When you’re on the hunt for new office equipment, make sure you look out for the energy ratings. Even if it costs a little bit more initially, in the long-run you will save yourself a lot of money by only buying products that are very energy efficient.
Use energy-saving lightbulbs
If there’s anything you’re bound to have a lot of in your office, it’s lightbulbs. Electricity is one of the biggest expenses companies have but you can dramatically reduce this by using energy-efficient lightbulbs. In fact, each one can save you up to £100 over its lifetime.
